Dashboard warning lights: what they mean
Updated 22 Oct 2026
The colour tells you how urgent it is. Exact symbols vary by car, so check your owner's manual if you're unsure.
Red: stop as soon as it's safe
- Oil pressure (an oil can): stop and switch off. Driving without oil pressure can ruin the engine.
- Engine temperature (a thermometer): the engine is overheating. See engine overheating.
- Brake warning: the handbrake may be on, or the brake fluid is low. Don't ignore it.
- Battery / charging (a battery): the battery isn't being charged. You may only have a short time before the car stops.
Amber: get it checked soon
- Check engine (an engine outline): many possible causes. A computer diagnosis reads the fault code. If it flashes, reduce speed and get help soon.
- ABS: normal braking still works, but anti-lock braking may not.
- Airbag: the airbags may not work in a crash.
- Tyre pressure: check all four tyres, including for a slow puncture.
Green or blue
Information only: headlights, indicators, cruise control.
