How to read your tyre size (e.g. 185/65 R15 88H)
Updated 22 Oct 2026
The size is moulded on the side of every tyre. Tell the tyre shop or vulcanizer the full size, or send them a photo of it, so you get the right replacement.
- 185
- Width: 185 mm across the tread.
- 65
- Sidewall height is 65% of the width, about 120 mm. Lower numbers mean a thinner sidewall.
- R
- Radial construction, which almost all car tyres use.
- 15
- Fits a 15-inch rim (wheel). The whole tyre is about 621 mm tall.
- 88
- Load index: up to 560 kg per tyre.
- H
- Speed rating: safe up to 210 km/h.
When you replace tyres, match the size on your car's door sticker or manual, and don't go below the original load index or speed rating.
Also on the sidewall
- Manufacture date: a four-digit code such as
2321means week 23 of 2021. Tyres age even when unused. Be wary of very old ones, including tokunbo tyres. - Tread wear indicators: small bars in the grooves. When the tread is level with them, replace the tyre.
